  • Does braking at the last minute save wear and tear?

Dear Tom and Ray: My wife's grandfather drives like an idiot. Specifically, he never touches the brake pedal until the very last second, at which point he slams on the brake, throwing everyone forward and sending various objects hurtling about the car. Someone finally asked him what he is thinking, and he replied that he is prolonging the life of the brakes. His theory is that if he slams on the brakes, lurching the car to a fast, screeching halt in a second, it means less time for the brake pads to be rubbing and thus wearing down. If he gradually eases the car to a nice, sane stop, it means all the more time for the brakes to be wearing down. Of course, he's crazy, right? Or could he be on to something? -- Ian

  • Can modern engines still "blow up" from racing?

Dear Tom and Ray: Yesterday a vehicle crashed into some trees near my house. The driver apparently had passed out while driving and was not conscious, but his foot was still on the gas. The engine was racing and the tires were spinning, and there was a lot of smoke. My son was able to reach through the passenger side and turn off the engine. I was afraid it was going to blow up. Which leads to my question: How long would it take for a racing engine to blow up? Or would it "blow up" from racing like that? -- Judy

  • Just how crazy is it, for David's daughter to buy a Jag XJS?

Dear Tom and Ray: My 24-year-old daughter is moving to Los Angeles from New York City and will need a car. She is in love with the Jaguar XJS Coupe. Her budget will allow an early-1990s model with 100,000-plus miles. My questions are many, but I really need to know how much trouble she is in if she purchases one of these cars. Is the maintenance affordable? Do they run, or only look good on the curb? Should Dad stay out of the decision-making process? Thanks for any insight you can offer. -- David

  • Piper's Subaru shakes like mad on left turns. Can Tom and Ray help?

Dear Tom and Ray: I have a manual-transmission 2000 Subaru Forester with 126,000 miles that I've had since it had 12 miles on it. I also have a 1-month-old baby. As a new mom, my car has me a little worried. During the past year, it has started shaking violently whenever I make a left turn. This starts happening after I've driven it about 10 miles. When I say "shaking violently," I mean it feels like the body is going to rip itself off the chassis. I've taken it to the dealership and multiple mechanics who won't get in the car long enough to feel the problem, so it hasn't been reproduced for a professional. They have all told me, "That's what happens to Subarus with high mileage." I find that hard to believe. Any thoughts? Is it still safe to take on long trips? Thanks. -- Piper

  • Today: A reader with a truly "weighty" issue.

Dear Tom and Ray: Hello! My older sister has a 1996 Saturn SC2, and she is constantly yelling at my sister, my mom and myself for supposedly "plopping" into the seat. She claims that because we don't carefully control our muscles while we get into the car, the impact from our weight falling into the seats will harm the shocks. I don't believe this at all. Also, I don't think that I am getting into the car so clumsily. I think she is mistaking the feeling of the car slightly sinking when more weight is added for my being careless when getting into the car. It's at the point now where I regret riding with her after I get in the car. Can you tell me if there is any merit to her claim? Thanks! -- April

  • Today: Are professional-quality tools really worth the extra money?

Dear Tom and Ray: I have a question that doesn't involve a car problem. I am currently going to school to earn an associate of applied science in the automotive field. Ever since high-school auto class, I have heard the names Snap-on, Matco and Mac as the only options for tools. However, I find it hard to believe that mechanics pay 14,000-dollar for a toolbox and 100-dollar for a ratchet. So my question is, is it REALLY worth the money? Or is it smarter to just get Craftsman or other cheaper tools, and just replace them when they break? I'd rather not owe my life to a guy on a tool truck if I can help it. Thanks. -- Ryan

  • How can Lisa convince her car that it's not being stolen?

Dear Tom and Ray: I am trying to jump-start my husband's 2008 Honda Accord. It's been sitting for a few months since he was deployed to Iraq, and I need to move the car ASAP before the street sweepers come. However, when I connect the last jumper-cable clamp, the horn starts blowing. How do I make it stop so I can jump the car and not have the whole neighborhood staring at me? Thanks! -- Lisa

  • Today: what's the best way to clean up some... vomit?

Dear Tom and Ray: A passenger in my son's Toyota Tacoma truck did not get his head all the way out of the window prior to vomiting. The exterior and the interior of the truck have been detailed, but the smell lingers. When the window is rolled up, it comes up with a smear --leading us to believe vomit got inside the door frame. How can this be cleaned? Remove the door panel? Pour water into the door frame via the window opening? What do you suggest? -- Janice

  • Today: how it is that digital odometers don't lose their data.

Dear Tom and Ray: Everyone knows it is illegal to change an odometer reading, and I wouldn't do it even if I knew how. My 1999 Chevy Malibu (the best car I've ever owned) has an electronic display. I am curious as to why the odometer data is not lost when the car battery is removed. On the electronic clocks I have, if the power is disconnected, you have to reset the clock when power is restored. I'm sure many of your readers are wondering about this also. An "expert" told me there is a small battery backup in the circuit. But what if the car were put in storage for months and this battery eventually failed? Thanks. -- John
